On December 8th, Tech in Motion is proud to present their 2nd Annual San Francisco Timmy Awards, which will be held at the Autodesk Gallery (One Market St., 2nd Floor). The “Timmys” are hosted by Tech in Motion in tech hubs across North America, with the goal of acknowledging the local companies and individuals that strive to create the best places for technology professionals to work in. After all the votes are in, the finalists in each city come together for one celebratory evening where the winners are crowned as the best (1) technology manager, (2) technology work culture, and (3) tech startup. Ayori SelassieAyori Selassie- Senior Solutions Engineer of Salesforce

“Solve big problems both inside the workplace as it relates to diversity and inclusion and outside the workplace by applying their top professional talent”

Ayori developed a framework to promote Work Life Integrity called the Life Model Canvas® and has been very integral at Salesforce in helping employees understand the difference between Work Life Integrity and Work Life Balance.  She developed and delivers workshops on Work Life Integrity where employees use the Life Model Canvas® and the Work Life Integrity Assessment tool to develop alignment of their personal life, family and career goals. Her workshops have been requested throughout the company and have been delivered to many employee groups at Salesforce beyond her own team including Employee Resource Groups, Lean In Circles, the Women’s Technology Leadership group, Business Development group, as well as external audiences at Dreamforce and the Computer History Museum.

Eva focuses her energy on empowering her team to deliver smart devices that simplify people’s lives, setting product vision and supporting their needs. She recently used the design thinking methodology on a purpose exercise where each of team member listed what defines them, what drives them, what the world needs, and then led the exercise to realign together on key themes for their future developments. She also organizes a lot of events – team games, contests, etc. where they have the opportunity to play together and spark ideas.  Because they’re about creating the intelligent systems that do not exist yet, it’s part of her role to stimulate out of the box thinking.

Hexo+ is the first self-flying camera, following and filming you automatically while you focus your energy on the action. After a very successful Kickstarter raising $1.3million in June 2014, they managed to create and deliver 3000 units within a year.

Joanne PonsJoanne Pons – Senior Director, Software Engineering of MyVest

“All should share their opinions, whether they have been with the company for years or they are on day one.”

At MyVest, all team members are paired with a mentor, so they have the opportunity to learn from more experienced team members and  peers. Minnie created a “management rotation” program for associates one to two years out of school modeled off of Google’s APM program. She leads both the Shift surf trip to Pacifica before weekly All Hands meetings, and  Shift’s running club (while pushing a stroller).

Her team has made it easy to sell used cars from the press of a button. Shift has a sophisticated pricing algorithm that can instantly price cars simply by scanning a car’s VIN from an iphone app.

Susan MernitSusan Mernit – CEO of Hack the Hood

“A framework of innovation and social justice/racial justice”

Susan and Hack the Hood developed two processes that have been huge in creating a strong team culture: a power-sharing process where an elected member of the staff serves a six month rotation on the lead/senior team which ensures that the perspectives of grassroots staffers are heard, and a program called circling up, or clean talk, where staffers can meet in a safe space to talk openly about conflicts and issues as an entire team, without worrying about retaliation or censure. These processes have helped make Hack the Hood a place where people like coming to work and feel safe, seen, and valued.

Hack the Hood connects low-income young people of color and local small businesses through technology, in order to create opportunities for all the people who live in the Bay Area, and beyond, to take part in and lead the change that is happening around them. Under David’s management, career growth is measured less by title and much more by the opportunity to learn new skill sets, hone existing abilities, and demonstrate an ability to kick ass. At the First Annual Timmy Awards in Chicago, Tech in Motion acknowledged the region’s top employers for technology professionals with a ceremony crowning the best work culture, technology managers, and startup leaders from a field of 30 impressive local finalists. Local community members submitted more than 200 nominations, and the finalists racked up 11,000 votes altogether. The winners included the first female “Best Technology Manager” in Timmy Awards history: Litha Ramirez, Director of Experience Strategy and Design at Breakthrough Technologies.

The 3 Tech Startup Lessons You Need to Learn (From A Mark Cuban-backed CEO)

Lots of people have ideas. Mention you’re an app developer and you’ll be instantly bombarded with tons of far-fetched visions for apps. The problem is that most people don’t have the passion to actually turn their idea into a product. Being a developer, I have always been able to think of a cool idea, sketch it out, and then build a beta version of the app in anywhere from three days to six months. This allows me to jump on ideas quickly and get a working version into the hands of my family, friends, and co-workers.

Obviously, not everyone has the technical chops to code an app. I’ve spent over six years learning programming — sometimes coding for up to 18 hours a day. You don’t have to be a code guru to be in tech. Many of the greatest tech innovators of our day were not technical guys. Instead, they were visionaries who knew exactly what they wanted their product to be and how to get there. The key to running a startup is to be scrappy. If you really truly want an idea to see the light of day, then you will do whatever it takes. You’ll wake up early and go to bed late and you’ll meet the right people. You’ll sacrifice time and energy and effort and money. Do one thing every day that pushes your idea to the next level and closer to the starting line, and these three tips will help guide your tech startup to success.

1.     Fail Quickly

The only way to know if your product has any hope of being successful is by getting it into the hands of consumers. Many companies spend years developing software and testing it exhaustively, often delaying their launch further and further. You don’t have to get it right on the first try.

Of course you don’t want to develop an app that constantly crashes, but you also don’t want to build every feature you can think of in version 1. Stay focused on 1–3 key features for your app and make them minimal. The goal here is to create a working version of your app that demonstrates the general purpose of your app. This is very helpful when sharing the app idea with investors or future business partners. By showing a working version of the app you are showing that you are invested in the idea and really mean business.

Also, don’t take months to update your app. Listen to user feedback, build it, launch it, and repeat it.

 

2.     Success Doesn’t Happen Overnight

Many people read articles about startups that seem to take the world by storm overnight and don’t see why they can’t do the same. While there are a few that have done this, the majority of companies take years and years to build. When I launched my first app, I woke up the next day disappointed after seeing the small amount of downloads that I had received. I was under the assumption that as long as you grind through the tough development work, after that you were golden.

I was wrong. Because of the large amount of apps on the market, it’s hard work to get downloads. Because people have short attention spans, it’s even harder to retain users. While app growth takes time, it also takes work. Some people think that if they just wait a year then they will check back in and magically have millions of organic users.

This is not the case. Because the majority of people have never even heard of your app, your job is to locate your target customers and sell them on your product. You have to continue to grind. Never stop selling.

 

3.     Keep on Keeping On

Though running a startup is hard work, it is highly rewarding – but not in the way you may think. Lots of people start their own company because they are money hungry. They want to drive cool cars and set their own hours — who wouldn’t?

It takes true passion and dedication to what you are doing. You won’t be able to last through the bumps on the road if you are not motivated by your product making the world a better place. It sounds cliché, but in the end that’s why most products and inventions are created. The human race tends to look at the results without looking at the work put in. People will be sure to notice the good things, but will easily overlook the late nights you spent in front of the computer screen in your parent’s basement banging your head against the keyboard because of an unknown bug.

Even if you’re in a dip, continue pressing on and building what you believe in and what people find useful.

Disrupting the Payments Space with Digital Currency and Blockchain Technology

There is a lot of hype surrounding Bitcoin, digital currencies, and mobile payments as a whole. There has been a shift in the financial industry, and everyone is feeling it; from banks, to brokers, to asset managers, individuals, and everyone else around the table. Alas, no one is really sure where its all going and everyone has their own personal opinion: “Bitcoin is dead!”, “Bitcoin is going up to $5,000!”, and my personal favourite, “Bitcoin is a fad on a steady decline”.

After Mt. Gox was compromised, individuals and miners who held Bitcoin were unsure where to turn with their digital assets. Could anyone really be trusted? How do we prevent another Mt. Gox-esque heist? This is the foundation that Incryptex was built upon. Our founders were deeply affected by the Mt. Gox disaster, or as I call it, Digital Currency Chernobyl. Incryptex started out with a single objective in mind: to provide the safest platform for storing, buying, selling, and sending digital currencies.

The main principle in Bitcoin is decentralization, which pushes the responsibility and control to the user side as opposed to the centralized model (such as a traditional bank or payment network), which relies heavily on access control in order to keep the bad guys away.

Because network security is based on proof of work, and not access control, the network can be open and no encryption is required for Bitcoin traffic.
On the other hand, the traditional payment network has to be secured end-to-end with encryption and must ensure that no eavesdroppers can compromise the payment network traffic in transit or even while at rest.
Bitcoin is very much different – for example, a Bitcoin transaction authorizes only a specific value to a specific recipient and this cannot be modified or tampered with.

In relation to payments, Incryptex is the backbone that powers merchant services including clearance, settlements, and payment processing. Our technology enables developers to build all sorts of neat payment and small business products on top of this backbone: checkouts, payroll, employee benefit management tools, donations, and more. Disrupt or Corrupt?

The great thing about blockchain technology is the public ledger, which is a record of transactions that anyone in the system has access to. It’s very hard to corrupt digital currency transactions because of this ledger and unique sets of keys (including multi-signature features) that need to be exchanged and used to complete the transaction. Once your transaction has been added to the block, it’s there on record, accessible by the public. No encryption is required to be applied on a Bitcoin payment network. Bitcoin transactions can be even shared over public channels, such as unsecured WiFi or Bluetooth, with no loss of security.
Bitcoin’s decentralized security model puts a lot of power in the hands of the users, who are responsible to properly secure the keys in hands.

There are also some gaps in Bitcoin in relation to payment processing when compared to a product such as a credit card. If I purchase a pair of scissors from a vendor with my credit card and the scissors don’t work, I can return them and the transaction is reversed. If I buy a pair of scissors from a vendor using Bitcoins and the scissors don’t work, I’m out of luck if the vendor refuses to give me a refund. The transaction cannot be reversed and I cannott get my money back. In addition, because private keys don’t publicly identify individuals, I may not know exactly who I’m sending the Bitcoins to. Is it the vendor? The vendor’s dog? I simply don’t know.

Bitcoins and blockchain tech is disruptive in the payments space because it removes a lot of the fees and friction in the way money travels and is processed. This is great news for both businesses and individuals. Want to send money to your family in the Philippines? No problem. Do it instantly with a single tap and one minimal flat fee. By friction in payment processing, I mean getting the best exchange rate, transaction fees, and holding time on funds. Bitcoin breaks down all of these barriers.

There are over 100,000 businesses accepting Bitcoin as payment, and we are only going to see this number grow as more tools are created for developers to go out and build really great stuff. Adoption has always been an issue, but it’s not really about Bitcoin owners hoarding their loot – but more so about creating opportunities to spend the digital currency. I still can’t pay my rent or bills in Bitcoin, or buy groceries or a hot dog off the street… but the second I am able to, you can bet your coins that I will!

Product Management: Startup vs Big Company

Now that I’ve been at Postmates for almost 8 months, a lot of people have asked me the difference between Product Management at a larger company like Twitter (where I worked from July 2010 to July 2014) or Google (where I worked from 2007 to 2010) and at a startup like Postmates. I wondered this myself too before I decided to join a startup.

So first, let me define Product Management at a larger tech company. As a Product Manager, you’re responsible for defining a roadmap for your area and ensuring that roadmap will yield the goals or objectives you set forth for your team (and these team goals should clearly map to the goals of the company). You’re responsible for ensuring the items on the roadmap are prioritized, and that there are clear product specifications for those items. Finally you work closely with the team to build, launch, collect data/feedback, and iterate. Through all phases, including planning, you’re working closely with engineering, design, and other key stakeholders across the company. And because everyone looks to you as a leader for your product area, it’s important you’re inspiring those around you to do their greatest work by setting the right context, establishing a sense of urgency, and working collaboratively.

As it turns out, all those fundamentals remain the same at a startup. In fact, the fundamentals are so important that having experience at a larger company as a Product Manager is one of the best forms of training for startup Product Management. But on top of all that, at a startup you have responsibilities and challenges that don’t exist at a larger company. If you’re thinking of making the transition from big company PM to startup PM, here are some things you’ll want to know.

1. You’ll often have to do things you’ve never done before and probably suck at.

Working at a startup you quickly discover where your personal weaknesses are because on a daily basis you need to do something you’ve never done before and probably aren’t good at yet. The main way this manifests is through needing to do something that larger companies have a person or team dedicated to doing. For example, at a startup you will most certainly not have a user research team that helps you assess how your feature will be received in the market. If you want user research or early feedback on a prototype, you’ll have to find and interview users yourself. Although it can be scary to roll up your sleeves and try something you’ve never done before, it’s also the fastest way to learn how to do it. If you’re lucky, you may discover a talent you didn’t know you had!

2. You’ll need gymnast levels of flexibility.

Imagine any company has 5 “fire drills” a quarter. In other words, an average company has 5 times per quarter when they need to react quickly to something in the market, change a plan due to unexpected data or user feedback, or get in a war room and really focus on a hard problem that hasn’t been given enough attention. At a larger company, those 5 times are spread out between a lot of people and teams so you probably experience yourself at most one per quarter. At a startup, any fire drill usually involves most of the product, design, and engineering team because the team is so small. It’s important at a startup that you can quickly tackle these fire drills, not get too thrown off course, and reprioritize your roadmap when needed. Most importantly, you need to mentally be able to deal with plans changing more frequently. It’s ok!

3. You’ll do less talking the talk, more walking the walk.

At a startup, there’s nowhere to hide. People who can step up to the plate and tackle the challenges will shine and get even more responsibility. Underperformers who can’t cut it will quickly make their way out. In addition to not needing to worry much about whether your individual performance will be recognized, if you ask any good PM at a larger company they’ll tell you they spend some percentage of their time carving out territory for their team, evangelizing the great results of their team, and other activities generally thought of as “managing up”. It’s not because large companies are full of evil political people, it’s just because when you have so many people working somewhere it’s easy to get lost in the noise if you aren’t making it clear what your team works on and the results they’ve achieved.

You don’t have to worry about that much at a startup. Now, I spend my time working and moving the company forward rather than evangelizing my team internally. With fewer people to communicate with, you can spend more time doing the work, which is great because there’s a lot of work to do.

Last winter, San Francisco techies flew through the industrial doors of Quid to begin a night of networking and data visualization. As the food and drinks flowed, attendees networked and looked forward to the speaker series following the cocktail hour, featuring Joey Hobbs of Quid, Mikko Jarvenpaa of Infogram and Alex Salkever of Silk.co.

One Tech in Motion member, Robert, who is a customer success manager from SF, said he was “excited for the panel to start and learn more about data visualization”.

As members began to fill the space they made their way through tea sandwiches and vegetable platters as well as the beer and wine bar. Guests mingled over the latest in data news and common interests. One member mentioned that she “wasn’t expecting so many people” and that it was “encouraging to see so many tech people in one place.” The crowd still quieted down easily in anticipation of the tech talk from the three tech experts of the night.

First on the microphone was Alex Salkever from Silk.co. Alex showed Tech in Motion how members can use Silk to take data and turn it into rich, interactive visuals that are easier to comprehend and can be helpful in business. He stressed the importance of communicating efficiently through visuals and using them to improve business strategy.

Next up was Mikko Jarvenpaa from Infogram. Mikko showed how Infogram’s product can assist anyone in making infographics for their personal and business uses. He also emphasized how prominent infographs are becoming amongst Internet searches and in business plans.

Last on the stage was Joey Hobbs from Quid. He brought up an interactive analytical map that showed different relationships between data visualization companies. This map could compare information between two companies, such as funding, to help formulate better business decisions. He dove deep into the technical side of data visualization and wowed the audience with his expertise on the matter.

Upon finishing the talks members were given twenty minutes to do a Q&A with the speakers. Questions were flying until the very end of the session and continued after the official presentation time was over. All three speakers were greeted with curious members that wanted to know just one more thing about data visualization. Greg, a member from SF, explained “although it’s not what I’ve done in my background, I enjoyed hearing about data visualization.”

As the night came to a close members finished up last drinks and closed conversations with the exchange of business cards. They chatted about the speakers, what they learned and how they’d use data visualization in the future. Virtual reality is something many people have heard of, but few have experienced. Yet trying to put it into words is, as one blogger stated, “like trying to take a picture of your favorite song.” Poised to disrupt the way we see, live and engage with the world, the fully immersing experience of VR has the potential to change the face not just of gaming or entertainment, but has implications for education, travel, healthcare, real estate, and more.

Today, you can put on VR goggles and have an immersive experience beyond your imagination – with high-definition 360-degree, 3D video and binaural audio, you can feel as though you’re in the world’s most spectacular places, on stage next to your favorite musician, or on the field cheering on your home team, even when you’re thousands of miles away.

The truly exciting part about virtual reality is that this is just the beginning. The potential applications for this technology is something that excites us tremendously and we are continuously exploring.

Much of the content that is currently being developed for virtual reality goggles is simulated or digitally produced, along the lines of video games. At Jaunt, we’re building the full-stack technology to create cinematic VR. This includes the camera, software editing, and content production. Instead of exploring a simulated world, you can be transported to other places in the real world.

This also means exploring new means of storytelling beyond the current capabilities of traditional film-making. We’re discovering new ways to use the technology, and it’s opening up huge new doors for writers, directors, actors, artists, and other content creators.
